Marriage Should Be Safe: Understanding and Preventing Partner Violence in India

A message from Kalika Matrimony to every family beginning this journey

When two people decide to build a life together, safety should never be a question mark. Yet cases of intimate partner violence   and in the most tragic instances, partner homicide   continue to make headlines across India. As a matrimony platform, we don't just want to help you find a match. We want that match to lead to a safe, respectful, and lasting relationship.

This post looks honestly at why these tragedies happen, and more importantly, what families and individuals can do to prevent them.

The Reality We Need to Talk About

Intimate partner violence in India isn't rare, and it isn't limited to any one class, religion, or region. It often builds slowly   starting with control, jealousy, or verbal abuse   long before it turns physical or fatal. Dowry-related disputes, extreme possessiveness, financial control, and unresolved family conflicts are common threads in the most severe cases.

The uncomfortable truth is that many of these situations show warning signs early. The tragedy is that they're often dismissed as "normal adjustment issues" in a new marriage.

Red Flags Families Should Never Ignore

  • Excessive control   dictating who the partner can talk to, what they wear, or where they go
  • Isolation from family and friends, especially early in the relationship
  • Explosive anger over small disagreements
  • History of violence in previous relationships or within the person's family
  • Financial control or demands tied to dowry, property, or income
  • Threats   even ones framed as jokes ("I'll never let you leave")

If any of these show up during the matchmaking process, courtship, or early marriage, they deserve a serious conversation   not silence.

What Families Can Do Before Marriage

  1. Verify backgrounds thoroughly. Beyond horoscopes and family reputation, ask about the prospective partner's temperament, past relationships, and how they handle conflict. Speak to people outside the immediate family circle if possible.
  2. Encourage direct conversations. Let the couple spend real time talking   including about disagreements, finances, and expectations   before the wedding, not just during a few chaperoned meetings.
  3. Watch how they treat others. How someone speaks to waitstaff, drivers, or their own parents often reveals more than how they behave on a first meeting.
  4. Normalize walking away. A family's honor is not worth a lifetime of danger. Make it clear   to both families   that concerns raised now are taken seriously, not seen as an insult.

What to Do After Marriage, If Something Feels Wrong

  • Trust the pattern, not the promise. Isolated incidents can be genuine mistakes; repeated patterns of control or aggression are not.
  • Keep communication lines open with your own family abusers often try to cut this off first.
  • Document incidents messages, injuries, witnesses   quietly and safely, in case legal help is needed later.
  • Know the legal protections available, including:
    • Section 85 & 86 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly Section 498A IPC)   cruelty by husband or relatives
    • The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005
    • Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961
  • Reach out to support services without waiting for things to "get worse":
    • Women's Helpline: 181 (National)
    • Police Emergency: 112
    • National Commission for Women: 7827170170

Our Commitment at Kalika Matrimony

If you or someone you know is in an unsafe relationship, please don't wait. Speak to family, a counselor, or the helplines above. No tradition or social expectation is worth a life.
